Explosion Isolation Flap for Industrial Dust Collection

Performance rated for ST2 and ST3 dust classes

The VigiFlap explosion isolation valve installs in ductwork upstream of dust collectors to stop deflagration propagation. Passive mechanical operation, no power required. ATEX certified, NFPA 69 compliant, available in 4″ to 54″ diameter. Supplied and supported by Collectors & Filters for Indiana and Midwest facilities.

Engineered for Hazardous Dust Conveying and Woodworking Facilities

The Explosion Isolation Flap is a passive, spring-locked safety valve installed upstream of dust collectors, cyclones, and filters to prevent deflagration propagation. Constructed from powder-coated mild steel as standard (galvanized or 316SS optional), these valves remain open during normal process airflow and close automatically when explosion overpressure reverses airflow direction. This mechanical response blocks fire and pressure from reaching upstream equipment or occupied work zones. Each unit features a straight-through inlet and outlet design that minimizes airflow resistance and eliminates internal dust accumulation. Because the system is entirely mechanical, it eliminates failure risks associated with electrical sensors or battery backups, making it a reliable choice for combustible dust isolation in wood, grain, and metal processing environments.

Key Capabilities

  • Passive mechanical operation — no external power, sensors, or battery backup required.
  • Integrated latching mechanism prevents the flap from being forced open by residual explosion pressure.
  • Designed in accordance with NFPA 69 and EN 16447, supporting NFPA 654 dust hazard management programs.
  • Available from 4″ to 54″ diameter to fit standard industrial duct sizes.
  • Tested and certified for installation in any position — vertical, horizontal, or angled.
  • Suitable for ST2 and ST3 hazardous dust classifications per EN 16447.

Using the VigiFlap With a FLAMEX System

The VigiFlap and FLAMEX spark detection address different parts of the same problem and are routinely specified together. FLAMEX handles ignition sources upstream, detecting sparks in the duct and extinguishing them with a water curtain before they reach the collector. The VigiFlap handles what happens if an explosion occurs anyway: it closes instantly under the pressure wave and stops the deflagration from traveling back through the ductwork toward your equipment and personnel.
Detect and Isolate: How the two systems divide the work
  • FLAMEX upstream: Infrared detectors monitor the duct for sparks. When detected, a 180° water curtain fires in under 300 milliseconds, extinguishing the ignition source before it reaches the collector. The spark detection system resets automatically.
  • VigiFlap at the collector inlet: If a deflagration reaches the collector, the passive flap closes under the pressure wave without requiring any signal or power. It prevents the explosion from propagating back through connected ductwork to process equipment or occupied spaces.
  • Together: FLAMEX targets prevention. The VigiFlap handles isolation if prevention fails. Most complete fire and explosion protection systems in combustible dust environments rely on both layers.
Collectors & Filters specifies both systems together for Indiana facilities handling combustible dust in wood, grain, metal, and food processing. We handle layout, sizing, and coordination between both product lines as a single point of contact. Contact us to review your system.
